Factory Road, Brynmawr
Client: Welsh Government
The Urbanists were commissioned to produce a development brief for the site of the former Recitel and Gwalia factories. The brief provides an urban design framework to guide future residential development of the site.
Our approach was to consider the two sites as one and devise a design solution to connect them. We proposed a ‘shared surface’ square to act as a focus for the scheme and to provide a connection between the two sites. The square will create a distinct ‘sense of place’ by providing a rich and attractive space that will give pedestrians priority over cars. A further ‘internal space’ again designed in accordance to the principles of ‘shared surfaces’ will add to the character of the development.
The design proposal provided an opportunity to demonstrate best practice in street and highway design as contained within the recently published ‘Manual for Streets’ (DETR 2007) and TAN 18: Transport (Welsh Assembly Government, 2007)
Considerations such as sustainability, retaining local character, accessibility, scale, massing and legibility were all considered key objectives and are represented in our design guidance.
