The Urbanists are acting as Planning and Landscape Consultants for Marcol Afan Energy in the development of a 18mW solar array project at Foel Fawr, near to Maesteg, South Wales.
The project proposes significant potential community benefits in providing sustainable energy to the local residents and includes a community engagement programme with Valleys 2 Coast Housing association.
The project is over 30 hectares in total and was subject to the rigours of Environmental Impact Assessment. The Urbanists managed the EIA process including the editing and collation of the Environmental Statement. The EIA process resulted in various refinements to the design proposals, to minimise potential perceived landscape impact. The scoping of both the planning application submission and the ES was undertaken through a close working relationship with the Local Planning Authority through the pre-application stage.
The Urbanists also undertook the Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment which was a key component of the ES. This was prepared through consultation with the LPA to agree its scope and identify view-points. The Urbanists integrated approach of planning, landscape, and EIA management ensured a clear and robust planning proposal that maximised the potential development site area and minimised it potential environmental impacts.
