Service: Planning consultancy
The Urbanists were appointed to manage, co–ordinate, and advise on the entire planning process for the overall restoration, and re-use of the grade II listed CRI complex in Cardiff City Centre, for Powell Dobson Architects and Laing O’Rourke. The works involved separate work packages for sequential parts of the building covering external works of demolition and extension, conservation and refurbishment works, replacement windows, internal works, and landscape improvements, and access works.
The comprehensive works required over twenty permissions being secured for listed building consent and planning permission. The Urbanists managed the complex planning process from initial design, through to completion. The work included rigorous pre-application stages with the LPA, and the preparation of detailed Heritage Justification Statements and the Design and Access Statements.
The work involved balancing the strict legislative requirements relating to works to listed buildings with the need to deliver this important project in a timely and cost effective manner. The appearance of the listed building has been significantly improved and a much more welcoming interface with the public realm has been created.
The Urbanists are retained for on-going conservation and development works on parts of the site not already covered.
