The Urbanists are retained as Planning Consultants to Laing O’Rourke on behalf of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board in this prestigious hospital expansion programme.  The overall project has involved a series of sequential development projects in advance of the new Adult Mental Health Unit.  Initially the Urbanists acted as planning consultants for the initial site wide engineering and reprofiling works, followed by the replacement of the previous surface historic car park (approximately 900 spaces) to a new multi-decked car park, with associated landscape work, ecological enhancements, and engineering works.

This enabling works project required a robust planning application submission in order to demonstrate that the scheme location, height, scale and massing had given full regard to the potential impact of the proposals in terms of landscape quality, views of the site, access, ecology, trees, drainage, light spill, and neighbouring residential properties.

This was then followed by the full application for the AMHU complex (approximately 20,000 sq. m floorspace), hard and soft landscape works, plus a new arrival / concourse building.  Key issues addressed during the planning process included site operation logistics, impact on the original historic building, and landscape / design impacts.  This building complex is now complete.

The Urbanists also secured planning permission for additional projects including an extension of the original building to provide an art gallery.  The Urbanists also managed and negotiated the required permission for the diversion of the public footpath which crossed the development area.

The Urbanists are retained as planning consultants for the proposed extension of the main hospital building.  Powell Dobson Architects are the architects for both of these projects.
