Merthyr Shopfront Planning Permissions

Client: Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council

Location: Merthyr and Treharris, South Wales

The Urbanists were appointed to design and secure planning permission, and in some case listed building consent, for shopfront enhancements in Merthyr town centre.

A key challenge was balancing the importance of each project being of appropriate design quality to preserve or enhancing the conservation area, whilst working within the fixed budget that had been secured.     A key element to our approach was to review the local heritage policy early and to incorporate the key guidance into the design from the concept stage.  We then engaged with the architects responsible for the detailed design to identify affordable design solutions, and then agreed the proposals and any bespoke requirements with the Council’s planning and conservation officers.

As a result of our approach robust planning permissions and listed building consents were secured swiftly and the shopfronts were delivered within budget. The final shopfronts improved the vitality of the town centre, and were part of the scheme that was awarded the Wales Planning Award 2015.
