Great Milton Garden Village

Client: Redrow Homes South Wales

Location: Llanwern, Newport

Services: Masterplanning and Landscape Design

In January 2018 The Urbanists were commissioned by Redrow Homes to produce a Design Code for a new garden village in Newport, South Wales. The Design Code, required by a condition of the outline planning permission previously granted for the site, sets clear rules and guidelines for Redrow’s future development.

The Urbanists masterplanning and landscape architectural teams worked with Redrow Homes to create a vision for a 21st century garden village which supports lifelong communities through creating a mix of housing, jobs and facilities for all. The team were keen to promote place-making, community and green infrastructure to facilitate a sustainable neighbourhood capable of accommodating up to 1100 homes.

The Code sets out how the overall aspirations for Llanwern will be delivered within the Great Milton Garden Village development are. This includes details relating to:

  • Access

  • Character

  • Community Safety

  • Movement

  • Environmental Sustainability

  • Public Realm & Landscape

The Design Code, last week approved by Newport City Council, will guide the physical aspects of any future proposals for Great Milton Garden Village, to ensure a high quality development that will contribute to a wider, cohesive vision. Newport City Council and Redrow Homes can use the document for  detailed design and during the decision making process at the reserved matters stage whilst providing development continuity and consistency in quality over time.

"Thankyou all for your hard work and commitment over the past 5-6months… As always, it was a pleasure working with you all. We have created what we think is a really good Design Code and I, personally, was very proud to make the submission"
